Do you need a car to attend community college in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, 23% of community and technical colleges have a public transit stop within walking distance.

An additional 15% — or 22 campuses — are less than five miles from an existing transit line, but not yet connected.

Civic Mapping Initiative assessed the 143 campuses belonging to Tennessee’s community and technical colleges to determine their proximity to public transit stops. Learn more about the methodology here.

Accessibility requires not only transit stops, but also schedules and routes that meet the needs of today’s college students. Our map does not include frequency or route information, but our partners at the Tennessee College & Success Network have published an assessment on the Nashville metropolitan area.

Transit Stop Proximity to Community & Technical College Campuses in Tennessee

Why is transit accessibility critical
for community college students?

Working students,

parenting students, and

students from low-income households are

overrepresented at community and technical colleges.

These students must manage “time poverty,” as they juggle family, work, and school commitments.

Statistics reflect national data from NCES and the College Board. Specific estimates for this state are not available.

Our Community & Technical College Transit Map displays all applicable campus locations in Tennessee.

We can invest in student success by improving transportation infrastructure.
